Ghana's government has announced a major nationwide crackdown on illegal structures built on wetlands following devastating floods that hit Accra and other parts of the country, claiming 12 lives and displacing over 7,700 households.

The Deputy Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, told Parliament that all buildings encroaching on six identified wetlands will be demolished as part of urgent measures to restore the natural flow of water and prevent future disasters.

Authorities are also advising affected property owners to seek compensation or refunds from individuals who sold them the lands, as the state intensifies efforts to reclaim and protect critical ecological zones.

This decision marks one of the strongest government responses yet to Ghana's recurring flood crisis.
