Legal scholar and governance expert Prof. Stephen Kwaku Asare is calling for sweeping reforms to strengthen Ghana's democracy, urging a clear separation between political parties and state institutions.
Speaking at the 2026 Solidaire Ghana Public Forum on the theme “Political Parties: Original Vision and Current Realities,” he argued that allowing party chairpersons to serve on boards of state institutions undermines accountability and weakens public trust.
Prof. Asare warned against the gradual merging of party structures with the state, insisting that Ghana risks weakening democratic governance if urgent reforms are not implemented.
He further proposed the creation of an Independent Commissioner of Political Parties to regulate political activities, investigate breaches of political law, and reinforce transparency within the system.
He also stressed that political parties must prioritise competence, integrity, and public confidence over money and patronage in selecting candidates for leadership roles.
