Ghana's High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, says Ghanaian nationals remain safe amid ongoing anti-immigrant protests in parts of South Africa.
He confirmed that no Ghanaian has been attacked and no Ghanaian shop has been looted, adding that diplomatic missions are in constant contact with citizens as tensions are closely monitored.
He also revealed that about 900 Ghanaians are on the list for voluntary evacuation after being screened and registered, with government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the President expected to facilitate another evacuation flight in the coming days.
He cautioned that the situation could worsen, urging Ghanaians to strictly adhere to safety advisories and highlighting the need for stronger law enforcement visibility.
A Ghanaian resident, Timothy Manyo, also raised concerns about alleged immigration enforcement activities in some communities, claiming arrests and document checks in areas such as Centurion near Pretoria. He further appealed for urgent intervention, saying many Ghanaians are willing to return home as conditions remain tense.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
