Accra has been hit by one of its most devastating flood disasters in recent years following torrential rainfall that left communities submerged, residents stranded, and lives lost.
This comprehensive report covers the full impact of the flooding across the capital:
Residents rescued by boat in Tse Addo after floodwaters cut off access to parts of the community. At least three people reportedly electrocuted in Alajo while attempting to retrieve belongings from flooded homes. Flood-related fatalities reported in Awutu Senya East, highlighting the growing human toll of the disaster. Circle, Adabraka, and Tse Addo residents counting heavy losses after homes and businesses were inundated. Heavy rains disrupted daily life, forcing some institutions to suspend operations while major roads experienced severe traffic congestion. The KasoaโMallam Highway recorded massive traffic gridlock due to flooding. Former MP Rita Odoley Sowah described the destruction in Tse Addo and surrounding communities, saying residents had lost virtually everything. Korle Klottey MP Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings visited affected areas, describing the flooding as unprecedented and deeply devastating. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) carried out rescue operations but lamented inadequate equipment and resources despite responding to numerous emergencies since dawn. The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMET) warned of continued rainfall and explained challenges affecting Ghana's early warning systems. The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition announced that electricity restoration would be gradual after floodwaters damaged the Mallam and Achimota substations, with engineers conducting safety assessments before restoring power. President John Dramani Mahama has pledged decisive action to tackle the recurring problem of perennial flooding.
