Stringer Dispatch: Venezuela quake-hit communities still need more aid
Venezuela was struck by two consecutive earthquakes measuring of more than magnitude 7 late on June 24. On June 28, Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly of Venezuela, announced that the death toll had risen to 1,450, with another 3,150 people injured. Rescue operations are ongoing, while displaced families have been relocated to shelters and relief supplies continue to be distributed across the affected areas.
A CGTN stringer visited multiple hard-hit areas in Caracas to document conditions on the ground and speak with locals and volunteers. Footage shows severe damage to numerous buildings, leaving many residents – including large numbers of elderly people and children – unable to return to their homes. Residents said that food, drinking water, and medicines have arrived in time, and there are currently no shortages of basic necessities. However, volunteers admit that the disaster-hit areas remain in urgent need of more aid.
