US confirms new strikes on Iran as fragile Hormuz agreement teeters amid escalating tensions

US Central Command has confirmed additional strikes on Iranian targets, saying the action was taken in response to an alleged Iranian attack on commercial shipping near the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state media reports explosions in the southern port city of Sirik, with officials saying projectiles struck near key infrastructure including a telecommunications tower. The city sits close to one of the world's most critical shipping routes.

The escalation comes just days after both sides signed a memorandum of understanding intended to reduce tensions, but competing interpretations of its terms—particularly around freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz—have fuelled renewed confrontation.

Officials and analysts say both sides are now effectively operating under conflicting readings of the agreement, with accusations of violations and counter-violations accelerating military action.

US officials insist the strikes are a measured response aimed at protecting commercial shipping, while Iranian officials accuse Washington of undermining the agreement and escalating the conflict.

As exchanges continue, concerns are growing that the already fragile understanding could collapse entirely, further destabilising the region.
