Lands Ministry, Security Agencies Shut Down Fake Mining Operation in Western Region

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, through its Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), in collaboration with National Security and the Police, has clamped down on an illegal mining operation in the Jomoro District of the Western Region.

The operation was discovered to be posing as a licensed rCOMSDEP site, raising concerns about illegal miners exploiting government initiatives.

Speaking after the operation, Head of Communications at the Minerals Commission, Dela Edem, said the task force acted on a tip-off from concerned youth of the Ghana-Nungua-Apatase community.

The youth reportedly raised alarms while on their way to an officially designated rCOMSDEP site, prompting swift intervention by security agencies.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to identify those behind the illegal operation and prevent further abuse of government mining programmes.
