Is Ghana's latest utility tariff increment justified? Or are consumers being forced to pay for inefficiencies within the power sector?

On this special compilation of The Big Issue with Umaru Sanda Amadu, leading voices from Ghana's energy, policy and political space debate the implications of PURC's latest tariff adjustment.

Featured voices include: Samuel Dubik Mahama (Former ECG Managing Director), who argues that tariff increments are a theoretical solution and likens them to "increasing the pressure on a tap and giving someone a basket to fetch the water." He insists ECG's biggest problem remains metering and says tariff hikes cannot recover the company's forex losses. Appiah Kusi Adomako (Director, CUTS International West Africa), who says PURC has not been robust enough in forcing ECG and the electricity value chain to reduce technical and commercial losses, warning that high electricity costs continue to drive industries out of Ghana. Kojo Asante (CDD-Ghana), who questions PURC's cost recovery model, asking who bears the cost of inefficiency, corruption, waste and poor meter management. Senyo Hosi (Convenor, One Ghana Movement), who argues that while exchange rate movements have influenced tariffs, Ghana needs a transparent pricing mechanism to avoid recurring under-recoveries. Isaac Boamah-Nyarko (MP for Effia), who says falling inflation and improving exchange rate conditions make the latest tariff increment difficult to justify, insisting consumers should not continue paying for inefficiencies. Abdul-Fatawu Alhassan (NDC MP for Yendi), who defends the quarterly adjustment mechanism, arguing that smaller periodic increases are preferable to large, one-off hikes and that current economic management has softened the impact.
