Okaikwei North Assembly Moves to Clear Road Medians of Homeless Mentally Ill Persons

The Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly has announced plans to remove persons believed to be living with mental illness from road medians and major highways within the municipality as part of efforts to address sanitation and safety concerns.
Municipal Chief Executive, Christian Tetteh Badger, explained in an interview with Citi News that some individuals have occupied sections of road medians and pavements, using them as sleeping areas.
He said the situation has contributed to sanitation challenges, as some of the occupants reportedly collect refuse from other areas and bring it onto the highways.
The Assembly says it plans to relocate such individuals to appropriate psychiatric facilities, including Pantang Hospital, as part of its broader effort to keep highways clean and safe.
The MCE also noted that the Assembly is intensifying maintenance of road medians following the rainy season, with its Environmental Health Unit actively clearing weeds, removing refuse, and improving sanitation conditions across the municipality.
