US and Iran exchange strikes after commercial ship attack as Strait of Hormuz tensions escalate
The United States says it has carried out strikes inside Iran in response to a drone attack on a commercial vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz, marking a major escalation in already fragile tensions.
US Central Command says it targeted missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar sites, describing the action as a response to what it calls a violation of the ceasefire and an “unwarranted aggression” against commercial shipping.
Iranian state media reports explosions near coastal areas in southern Iran, including Sirik and Kish Island, while Tehran says it has responded by targeting US military deployments in the region through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
President Donald Trump has accused Iran of violating the ceasefire agreement, warning that further action could follow, while US officials insist the strikes are a measured response aimed at preserving freedom of navigation.
Vice President JD Vance says Iran breached the agreement and claims the US has honoured its commitments, adding that diplomacy remains the priority but “violence will be met with violence” if necessary.
The developments mark a critical test of the ceasefire framework and ongoing negotiations aimed at preventing wider regional escalation.
