Forgotten: Haiti taken by gangs

Since the July 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moise, Haiti has descended into chaos, as rival gangs armed and financed by powerful elites seize control of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and extend their reach across the country. Block by block, these gangs have become a law unto themselves, forcing nearly 1.5 million people from their homes and leaving 6 million Haitians, half the population, facing severe food insecurity. The humanitarian crisis has been exacerbated by massive cuts to U.S. aid programs, leaving ordinary citizens caught in the crossfire of violence and neglect.

In this Big Story podcast, listeners are taken inside Haiti's all-or-nothing struggle for survival. The embattled government has turned to foreign mercenaries while preparing for a United Nations-backed gang suppression force, but many Haitians pin their hopes on a homegrown crime-fighting initiative with zero tolerance for lawlessness. From the gang-controlled slums of Port-au-Prince to the relative safety of the south, "Forgotten" delivers an unflinching look at a proud nation pushed to its breaking point and the people determined to reclaim its future.
