The International Finance Corporation has warned that weak succession planning and poor governance structures continue to threaten the sustainability of family-owned businesses.

Speaking at the IFC Family Governance Workshop Series, funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, Lead for ESG Advisory Practice across parts of Africa, Moez Miaoui, stressed the importance of preparing future leaders early while enabling current business leaders to transition into advisory roles.

He noted that family businesses should establish strong governance systems, clear decision-making processes, and succession plans to ensure smooth leadership transitions across generations.

The workshop forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the resilience and long-term sustainability of family-owned enterprises.
