The Environmental Protection Agency (Environmental Protection Agency (Ghana)) says Ghana is taking steps to phase out styrofoam due to its environmental and public health risks.
Acting Director of Sustainability and Circular Economy, Larry Kotoe, explained that Ghana already has safer alternatives such as paper-based packaging and reusable containers, which are being encouraged as replacements.
He warned that burning styrofoam releases toxic fumes, while improper disposal contributes to long-term air and land pollution.
Director of Human Settlement, Hope Smith Lomotey, added that styrofoam does not biodegrade but instead breaks into microplastics that enter the food chain and persist in the environment for decades, affecting rivers, drains, and marine ecosystems.
The EPA says extensive public education is ongoing across markets, schools, manufacturers, and hospitality operators, with a transition period set to run until January 2027.
Meanwhile, Channel One TV's Middle Belt Bureau Chief, Hafiz Tijani, reports worsening road conditions in Ejisu, where abandoned road projects have left deep potholes that pose serious risks to motorists and pedestrians.
He recounted a recent incident in which a school bus overturned on a deteriorated section of road, sparking community rescue efforts and renewed calls for urgent government intervention.
Residents say the poor roads have increased transport costs and vehicle maintenance expenses, deepening frustration over stalled infrastructure projects.
