Former Okaikwei North MP, Fuseini Issah, says he supports the position of GUTA and the Minority in Parliament regarding recent utility tariff adjustments.
He argues that macroeconomic indicators such as inflation and exchange rate stability should translate into reduced cost of living, noting that prices of goods and servicesโincluding food, transport, and school feesโremain high despite economic claims of improvement.
Meanwhile, Former National DRIP Coordinator, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, acknowledges concerns over tariffs but maintains that Ghana's utility sector requires urgent structural reforms due to long-standing inefficiencies.
He points to issues such as rising production costs, water pollution from illegal mining, and revenue shortfalls that continue to affect service delivery and increase reliance on government support.
He further explains that tariff adjustments proposed by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Public Utilities Regulatory Commission) are aimed at ensuring sustainability, and are subject to regulatory review, stressing the need to balance affordability with efficiency.
