A Professor of Electromechanical Engineering at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Prof. Christian Kwaku Amuzuvi, has called on government to remove the 20% tax on solar PV systems to encourage wider adoption of renewable energy in Ghana.
He made the call during UMaT's 13th Professorial Inaugural Lecture, themed โDriving the Green Energy Transition: Translating Ghana's LPG Adoption Model to Residential Rooftop Solar PV Systems.โ
Speaking to Citi News and Channel One TV, Prof. Amuzuvi noted that Ghana's energy transition has been slow and requires stronger incentives to boost solar uptake.
He explained that removing taxes on solar systems would make them more affordable for households and businesses, similar to policies that supported LPG adoption in Ghana.
According to him, government should prioritise tax reliefs and supportive policies to expand access to solar energy before considering future taxation of the sector.
