CSIR-SARI Warns of Rice Farming Setback This Season

There are growing concerns that some rice farmers may be unable to undertake farming this season due to difficulties in accessing markets for produce from previous harvests.

The situation has also affected demand for certified foundation seeds produced by the CSIR–Savannah Agricultural Research Institute, which are designed to support improved rice production nationwide.

Speaking to Channel One News during the Ricowas Project review meeting, Director of CSIR-SARI, Francis Kusi, said the market challenges confronting rice farmers are creating a ripple effect across the entire rice value chain.

He noted that demand for certified seeds had been strong in previous years but has declined this season due to uncertainty over the marketing of farmers' produce.

Dr. Kusi appealed to government to urgently intervene by purchasing farmers' produce or linking them to reliable markets to ensure they can sustain production in the upcoming farming season.
