Parliament Explodes Over Widows Day Comments – Acheampong, Afenyo-Markin, Ayariga Speak
A heated debate has erupted in Ghana's Parliament following controversial comments made during discussions marking International Widows Day, drawing reactions from both the Majority and Minority sides of the House.
The 2nd Deputy Majority Whip and MP for Bia East, Richard Acheampong, sparked uproar after remarks suggesting that women should support their husbands, pray for their longevity, and avoid overemphasising vulnerability after widowhood. He also highlighted that men face challenges in relationships and stressed the need for mutual support within marriages.
His comments were strongly challenged by the MP for Atiwa East, Abena Osei Asare, who stressed that widows in Ghana face severe hardships and called for urgent measures to ease their burden. She urged the MP to withdraw his comments, describing them as inappropriate and insensitive to the realities of widows.
The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, also weighed in, calling for a dedicated social intervention programme for widows. He emphasised that many widows—especially young women—face emotional trauma, financial hardship, and lack of family support, particularly in rural communities. He urged stronger advocacy on widows' rights and described parts of the comments as “dangerous,” calling for reconsideration.
In response, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga defended the remarks, explaining that they were made within the broader context of gender equality policies, including the Affirmative Action framework. He argued that ongoing reforms are aimed at reducing gender disparities and improving economic balance between men and women.
The exchange has intensified national debate on gender equality, widows' welfare, and social protection policies in Ghana.
