Minority: PURC Tariff Hike Contradicts IMF Agreement

The Minority in Parliament has further criticised the proposed tariff adjustments by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), arguing that the move contradicts reported provisions under Ghana's IMF-supported programme.

The caucus claims that the IMF agreement under the Akufo-Addo administration included provisions for quarterly utility tariff adjustments, which they say should not result in increases at this time.

Speaking to Citi News, Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament's Energy Committee, Collins Adomako-Mensah, reiterated concerns that the proposed 3.49% electricity tariff increase and 0.85% water tariff increase would place additional pressure on consumers.

He argued that, given current improvements in the utility sector, the expectation should have been a reduction in tariffs rather than an upward review.

The debate adds another layer to ongoing discussions about utility pricing, cost of living, and compliance with international financial programme commitments.
