“A Necessary Step” – Wa West MP Backs Nationwide Firearm Licence Revocation

Vice Chairperson of Parliament's Defence and Interior Committee and MP for Wa West, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has supported the government's decision to revoke all existing firearm licences nationwide, describing it as a necessary step to enhance public safety and promote responsible gun ownership.

The Ministry of the Interior recently announced the revocation of all firearm licences with effect from June 23, 2026, as part of a major overhaul of Ghana's firearms regulatory framework. Under the new system, all gun owners will be required to reapply and undergo stricter vetting, including mental health assessments, drug screening, and mandatory firearms training.

Speaking to Citi News, the former police officer stressed that while legal avenues for gun ownership exist, authorities must ensure that licensed holders remain responsible, as misuse of firearms poses a serious threat to communities and national security.

He welcomed the policy shift, arguing that individuals who possess firearms must be properly assessed to determine their fitness and ability to handle weapons safely.

Toobu further emphasised that when gun ownership begins to threaten public peace, government has a duty to intervene and strengthen regulatory controls.
