“Private Security Firms Should Not Be Armed” – Toobu Questions Gun Possession
Vice Chairperson of Parliament's Defence and Interior Committee and MP for Wa West, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has raised concerns over the possession of firearms by some private security organisations in Ghana, calling for urgent investigations into such cases.
Speaking to Citi News, the former police officer stressed that individuals or institutions in possession of firearms must be able to prove they have valid permits issued by the appropriate authorities.
He noted that under Ghana's laws, private security companies are generally not authorised to operate as armed entities, and any deviation from this must be thoroughly investigated.
Toobu also backed the government's nationwide revocation of firearm licences, describing it as the right first step toward restoring order in the country's firearms control system.
He explained that the new reapplication and vetting process will help authorities determine whether applicants are competent, responsible, and legally qualified to own weapons.
According to him, only those who meet strict requirements should have their licences reinstated, while others must remain disqualified to ensure public safety.
