Ayariga Defends Controversial Widows Day Remarks in Parliament

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has defended comments made by the 2nd Deputy Majority Whip and MP for Bia East, Richard Acheampong, during discussions marking International Widows Day in Parliament.

He explained that the statement was made within the broader context of gender equality efforts and ongoing legislative reforms, including the implementation of the Affirmative Action Law.

According to him, Parliament has made progress in recognising women's challenges and is working to ensure a more balanced society where both men and women are equally positioned economically and socially.

Ayariga added that effective implementation of equality-focused laws will reduce disparities between genders over time, ensuring that surviving spouses—regardless of gender—are better able to support themselves after the loss of a partner.

He maintained that Acheampong's comments should be understood within this broader policy and legislative context.
