US and Iran agree deal on frozen assets and sanctions relief amid nuclear talks
The deal includes the release of billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets and a temporary easing of US sanctions on Iranian oil and petrochemical exports. Both sides have also agreed to establish communication channels to ensure safe passage in the Strait of Hormuz.
Washington says further sanctions relief will depend on Iran's cooperation with international nuclear inspections. Iranian officials, however, have pushed back on some of the US claims, particularly regarding conditions attached to the use of released funds.
The talks come after nearly 18 hours of negotiations aimed at de-escalating tensions, with both sides signalling progress but continuing disagreements over nuclear oversight and the sequencing of sanctions relief.
Further technical discussions are expected as mediators push for a broader framework for a long-term agreement.
