River Blindness Cases Nearly Quadruple in Ashanti Region

Suspected cases of river blindness in the Ashanti Region have nearly quadrupled within a year, rising from 46 in 2024 to 160 in 2025, according to the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate.

The figures were disclosed at a press briefing ahead of the 2026 Mass Drug Administration exercise targeting onchocerciasis and schistosomiasis.

Ashanti Regional Director of Health Services, Fred Adomako Boateng, said the trend highlights the urgent need for sustained community participation in the fight against neglected tropical diseases, especially in communities along rivers, streams, and other water bodies.

Health authorities are urging residents in affected areas to take part in preventive and treatment programmes as efforts intensify to control the spread of the disease.
