GES Bans Lavish Post-WASSCE Celebrations in Schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced a ban on lavish post-West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) celebrations and expensive gift presentations to students on school campuses.

According to GES, heads of schools who allow extravagant celebrations will face sanctions as part of efforts to promote fairness and reduce inequality among students.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Director-General of GES, Ernest Kofi Davis, said the growing trend of luxury celebrations is shifting focus away from academic achievement.

The GES also revealed plans to set up a committee to review all school celebrations, including speech and prize-giving days, and develop standardised guidelines to regulate such events nationwide.
