Growing concerns over recurring floods and environmental degradation have sparked renewed calls for decisive action against illegal mining and unregulated development.
Ibrahim Adjei, Resident Country Director of International Investments LLC, argues that Ghana's persistent flooding challenges stem from institutional failures, including weak enforcement of planning regulations, encroachment on waterways, and environmental destruction.
According to him, blocking natural drainage channels inevitably leads to devastating consequences, stressing that government must remain uncompromising in its fight against galamsey.
Editor of The Newscenta Newspaper, Elvis Darko, also warned that the effects of illegal mining are borne by entire communities, regardless of who participates in the activity. He urged citizens to speak out against environmental destruction and reject silence and complicity.
The discussion further explored the need for a coordinated national response involving government agencies, security services, traditional authorities, and local communities to protect the environment and reduce disaster risks.
The panellists also reflected on broader societal issues, including social pressures, rising costs associated with celebrations, and the role of public policy in addressing behaviours that have wider social consequences.
