Andy Burnham confirms Labour leadership bid after Starmer resignation

Newly elected UK MP Andy Burnham has confirmed he will run for the Labour Party leadership following the resignation of Keir Starmer, positioning himself as a frontrunner to become Britain's next prime minister. Several senior Labour figures, including former health secretary Wes Streeting, have reportedly signalled support for his bid. Burnham, a former Mayor of Greater Manchester, is expected to be sworn in as MP for Makerfield and brings decades of political experience at both national and regional level. He has pledged to reduce living costs by cutting water, energy, and transport bills, while arguing for an end to “trickle-down economics.” However, analysts note he has limited foreign policy experience and remains relatively untested on the global stage. He previously voted for the Iraq war in 2003 and has recently called for UK recognition of Palestinian statehood, though he has remained cautious on foreign policy detail during campaigning. Burnham's potential leadership would mark a significant political shift and could make him the UK's seventh prime minister in a decade.
