US-Iran talks in Switzerland: What we know so far
High-level negotiations are taking place between the US and Iran, in the Swiss resort town of Burgenstock. Pakistan and Qatar are mediating the talks. Vice President JD Vance is leading the US delegation. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are part of the team. Iranian negotiators are there too, but did not take part in the photo opportunity with the US team and the mediators.
Iran's Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are leading Tehran's delegation. There had been uncertainty about the talks in the days after the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on ending the war. On Saturday Iranian forces said they closed the Strait of Hormuz after Israeli bombardment in southern Lebanon. The agreement calls for the fighting to stop on all fronts, including Lebanon.
