China's cinematic rise | Michael Berry of UCLA

Chinese domestic films now regularly dominate the local box office, reflecting a growing confidence in homegrown storytelling and stronger connections with Chinese audiences.

Michael Berry is a professor of contemporary Chinese cultural studies at the University of California and is also director of the Center for Chinese Studies. His work focuses on modern and contemporary Chinese literature, Chinese cinema, popular culture, and translation studies.

"It's during this period in the 2000s that new theaters are going up, ticket prices are going up, the whole box office revenue is expanding exponentially almost every year," Berry said.

He added, "Maybe in the future if we have co-productions 2.0, we'll see something that's more outside the box and thinking creatively about how to really capitalize on what the possibilities could be for bringing these two industries together."
