Exclusive: Japanese writer on why his country still won't face its war past

Japanese writer Yasushige Hanaika has spent years recording confessions from former Imperial Japanese soldiers who committed atrocities in China – and has published multiple books on the subject. In an exclusive CGTN interview, he said Japan has never truly reflected on its WWII aggression. Instead, it leans too heavily on the US for safety – and that, he says, is not real security. He's also worried that young Japanese people know little about their own history or today's realities, which is planting the seeds of new crises. How to change that? "One person's effort is far from enough," he says choking back tears. "Japan has become a country where it's no longer easy to speak the truth."
