Ablakwa Announces Preservation of Christiansborg Castle and Artefact Returns
Ghana has secured major commitments from European partners aimed at preserving historical memory and restoring cultural heritage.
Speaking at the reparatory justice conference in Accra, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed that the Danish government is collaborating with Ghana to preserve Christiansborg Castle, ensuring there is no erasure, minimalisation or denial of the atrocities linked to the transatlantic slave trade.
According to him, the castle will remain preserved as enduring evidence of centuries of injustice and serve as a powerful reminder of the commitment to "never again."
Mr. Ablakwa also revealed that the Dutch government has announced plans to return approximately 2,000 catalogued artefacts to Ghana, which are expected to be formally presented to President John Dramani Mahama.
In addition, the German government has identified artefacts originating from the Kpando traditional area and has expressed its readiness to return them to Ghana.
The developments mark significant progress in Ghana's efforts to promote historical truth, cultural restitution and reparatory justice.
