Health Ministry Urges Churches to Include Sickle Cell Testing Before Marriage

The Ministry of Health is urging faith-based organisations to incorporate sickle cell screening into premarital counselling as part of efforts to help couples make informed decisions before marriage.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 3rd Annual International Sickle Cell Centre Conference, the Director of Technical Coordination at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Hafiz Adam-Taher, said premarital counselling should go beyond discussions on relationships and commitment to include key health considerations.

He noted that knowing a couple's sickle cell status is essential in promoting awareness, prevention, and informed family planning decisions.

The Ministry believes the initiative will help reduce the prevalence of sickle cell disease and strengthen public health education nationwide.
