Analyst Urges Community Banks to Seek Investors Amid New BoG Rules

Finance analyst Nelson Kuagbezi is urging Community Banks that may struggle to meet the Bank of Ghana's new capital requirements to consider bringing in strategic investors, rather than waiting for consolidation pressures that could lead to forced mergers.

His comments follow the Bank of Ghana's decision under the Revised Microfinance Sector Framework 2026 to convert all Rural and Community Banks into Community Banks and increase the sector's minimum capital threshold as part of broader reforms to strengthen the industry.

Speaking to Channel One Business, Mr. Kuagbezi said the reforms should not be seen as a threat, but rather an opportunity for banks to reposition themselves and build stronger, more resilient business models.

He emphasized that proactive restructuring and investment partnerships will be key to survival and growth in the evolving financial sector.
