GES Urges Parents to Declare Children’s Sickle Cell Status in Schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is urging parents of children living with sickle cell disease and other chronic health conditions to inform schools about their children's health status to ensure they receive appropriate care and support.

Speaking at the 3rd Annual International Sickle Cell Centre Conference, National Coordinator of the School Health Education Programme, Theresah Oppong-Mensah, said such disclosure enables teachers and school authorities to provide the necessary care, accommodation and understanding for affected learners.

She also revealed that the GES, in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service, is training teachers to better support students living with chronic health conditions.

The initiative forms part of efforts to promote inclusive education and improve the wellbeing of learners across Ghana.
