Health Ministry Calls for Sickle Cell Screening Before Marriage

The Ministry of Health is calling on faith-based organisations to incorporate sickle cell screening into premarital counselling to help couples make informed decisions before marriage.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 3rd Annual International Sickle Cell Centre Conference, Hafiz Adam-Taher said premarital counselling should go beyond relationship guidance to include key health checks such as sickle cell status.

He also emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between government, the private sector and civil society to improve prevention, management and awareness of sickle cell disease in Ghana.
