‘The enforcement of freedom’: Inside Juneteenth’s deeper meaning despite Trump’s desire to erase it
On June 19, 1865, the remaining enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally received word of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, birthing what is known as Juneteenth. Following decades of advocacy, Juneteenth was marked as a federal holiday in 2021. But, there's still pushback from lawmakers, including President Trump who believe it should be derecognized. Eugene and Symone discuss the deeper meaning behind the holiday, and why its history matters. "Juneteenth is a reminder of how much governments lie,” says Eugene. And as Symone puts it, the holiday is “the enforcement of freedom”.
