Ashanti Region Begins Major Land Reclamation in Galamsey Areas

The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, in partnership with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, has commenced a large-scale land reclamation exercise in areas affected by illegal mining (galamsey) in the region.

Officials say nearly 100 acres of degraded land have already been reclaimed in the Bosome Freho District as part of efforts to restore damaged ecosystems.

The initiative is being carried out with support from National Security, NADMO, and the Minerals Development Fund, under the supervision of a committee led by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakohene.

Speaking during an inspection, Deputy Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator Alhaji Abubakar Nje said over 200 entities applied to participate in the programme, with 33 approved.

Authorities have cautioned illegal miners against returning to reclaimed lands, stressing that the exercise forms part of a broader directive to restore degraded mining communities.
