French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a broader understanding of reparations for slavery, warning against reducing the issue to mere financial compensation.

Speaking at the High-Level Consultative Conference on Next Steps under the United Nations Resolution on enslaved Africans in Accra on June 18, 2026, Macron said reparative justice must include truth-telling, education, memorialisation, restitution, and historical accountability.

He stressed that history “cannot be reduced to a simple accounting ledger,” adding that meaningful reparations should involve teaching, research, and the return of stolen cultural artefacts.

Macron also referenced ongoing discussions with Haiti and reaffirmed France's commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at advancing historical recognition and justice for the descendants of enslaved Africans
