Policy analyst and Co-Chair of the Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (GHEITI), Emmanuel Steve Asare Manteaw, is calling for the harmonisation of Ghana's mineral royalty management system.
Speaking at a Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) media and civil society workshop in Accra, he argued that the current fragmented structure is undermining the ability of mining host communities to achieve sustainable development outcomes.
Dr. Manteaw explained that multiple institutions — including the Office of the Administrator of Stool Lands and the Minerals Development Fund Secretariat — are managing overlapping portions of mineral royalties, leading to inefficiencies and higher administrative costs.
He urged policymakers to streamline the system to ensure greater transparency, accountability, and long-term benefits for mining communities, especially as Ghana expands its focus on critical minerals like lithium.
