“Every September I Turn to a Beggar” — Daisy Mina Antwi Speaks | Community Legends

Daisy Mina Antwi, one of the 10 nominees for the Channel One Community Legends 2026 Cohort, is being recognised for her extraordinary commitment to education, health, and community development across Ghana.

Her work includes renovating school blocks, enrolling over 2,000 children onto the NHIS, and organising comprehensive health screenings involving doctors, nurses, nutritionists, dieticians, and lab technicians. These medical outreaches also test children for diseases such as hepatitis, malaria, typhoid, and HIV, while also providing stationery and learning materials.

Explaining her motivation, she said:

“Education is the key and you have to focus on that… I think my first encounter was when I met a child in SHS who couldn't even spell basic words. I realised that educationists are doing well, but they also need some of us to come on board and help.”

Despite the impact of her work, Daisy reveals the financial strain behind her mission:

“A small NGO… I literally have to work 4–5 jobs to put funds into the NGO. I don't have international grants, nothing. I founded it myself.”

She also shared the personal sacrifice behind her back-to-school programmes:

“Every September, I turn to a beggar because that's when we do our back-to-school programme… I need to pay tuition for over 43 children on our scholarship scheme.”

Her outreach has taken her across Ghana and beyond, including challenging missions in remote communities such as Sissala East and parts of the Volta Region, where she has delivered relief items, educational support, and welfare assistance to children.
