Syria floods uncover unexploded ordnance in Deir Az Zor region

The Euphrates River flooded eastern Syria's Deir Az Zor last month for the first time in over 30 years, displacing thousands of families and unearthing landmines and unexploded ordnance left by 14 years of war. The UN considers Deir Az Zor the most heavily contaminated area in Syria, holding roughly a quarter of the country's unexploded ordnance. As floodwaters recede, demining teams are re-clearing ground previously made safe, while farmers, shepherds and even livestock remain at risk. Children account for nearly a third of explosive-related deaths in Syria since the fall of the former government.

Al Jazeera's Ama Boateng reports.
