EU to join US-led Pax Silica: A new front in the tech war on China?
The European Union is reportedly set to join Pax Silica, a US-led initiative aimed at coordinating export controls, investment policies and supply chains in advanced semiconductor and AI technologies. The initiative is widely seen as part of Washington's broader effort to maintain its tech edge and contain China's rise in strategic sectors, particularly artificial intelligence. The US says Pax Silica is designed to build a more secure and resilient tech ecosystem among partner countries. So what is Pax Silica? As the EU moves closer to joining the initiative, will Washington be able to achieve its objective of slowing China's technological advancement? Or will such efforts instead accelerate China's drive for innovation and tech self-reliance? Guests in this episode of Dialogue are Hosuk Lee-Makiyama, director of the European Centre for International Political Economy; Iain Begg, professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science; Max Wolff, professor at New School University and CEO of Systematic Ventures; and Andy Mok, author of The Innovation Machine.
