President John Dramani Mahama has directed the release of GH¢100 million to support the operational launch of the Ghana National Research Fund (Ghana National Research Fund) for 2026.

Speaking at the official launch in Accra, President Mahama said the Fund will help bridge the long-standing gap between research and commercial production, ensuring that innovations developed by Ghanaian researchers are effectively scaled for national development.

The Fund, established under the Ghana National Research Fund Act, 2020 (Act 1056), is designed to provide sustainable financing for research, innovation, and technology development across key sectors including science, agriculture, health, technology, social sciences, and the humanities.

At the same event, UNESCO Country Director for Ghana, Edmond Moukala, urged Ghana to strengthen its scientific and innovation base, stressing that true national freedom in the 21st century must be grounded in a country's own data, technology, and innovation.

He emphasized a shift from “brain drain to brain gain,” noting that Ghana is sending a strong signal that its scientists' expertise is needed locally and will be supported.

Separately, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, highlighted the importance of research-driven governance, adding that analysis of the 2024 election results reflects what he described as a strong and “irresistible mandate” for President Mahama.

Together, the messages underscore a broader national push to link research, innovation, and governance for long-term development.
