Qatar hopeful signing of Iran-US deal will be the beginning of fruitful negotiation
At his weekly press briefing in Doha, Qatar's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari confirmed Qatar's role in supporting the Pakistani-led mediation that led to the US-Iran memorandum of understanding. He said Qatar played a key role in narrowing gaps between the parties and reaching a language accepted by both sides. The MOU has been signed electronically and will be officially signed on Friday in Geneva. Qatar will be represented at the ceremony. Al-Ansari stressed that Qatar is supporting the Pakistani mediation, not leading it, and praised Pakistan's efforts. He said regional countries have come together to support the mediation, calling it a moment of "regional agency and strategic autonomy" in conflict resolution. He declined to comment on the contents of the MOU, saying details would be announced after Friday's signing. On regional security, al-Ansari said Qatar is "cautiously optimistic" about the MOU but stressed that decades-old issues – including the Strait of Hormuz, regional security, non-aggression, good neighbourly relations, the nuclear program, proxies and missiles – will not be resolved in mere days. He said a platform for engagement will be established for negotiations. On Lebanon, al-Ansari said there is "no justification" for Israeli attacks and that Lebanese sovereignty is a "red line". He warned that Israeli actions in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza are putting regional security in danger and making peace difficult. He condemned all attacks on Lebanon and reaffirmed Qatar's support for Lebanese sovereignty. Al-Ansari also outlined Qatar's diplomatic engagements during the week, including meetings on GCC-Canada strategic dialogue, political consultations with Indonesia, Palestinian issue meetings in France, mediation discussions in Zurich, and talks with Saudi Arabia, China and Lebanon.
