Trump claims Iran deal victory as questions remain over lasting peace: Marwan Bishara

US President Donald Trump is presenting the agreement with Iran as a major diplomatic victory, saying it will reopen the Strait of Hormuz and pave the way for a broader settlement.

But Al Jazeera's senior political analyst Marwan Bishara says the deal raises difficult questions, including whether Washington is claiming credit for ending a crisis that it helped create.

Bishara argues that many of the objectives now being pursued were already addressed under the 2015 nuclear agreement, which Trump withdrew from during his first term.

He also warns that while both Washington and Tehran appear to need a deal, the road ahead will be complicated by deep mistrust, unresolved disputes and the possibility that regional actors, particularly Israel, could try to undermine the agreement.

The memorandum of understanding may have opened the door to diplomacy, but whether it can deliver a lasting peace in the Middle East remains uncertain.
