The Ghana Water Company Limited in the Ashanti Region has raised serious concerns over the widespread destruction of forest cover around the Barekese Dam, a key water supply source for Kumasi.

Officials say illegal logging, farming, sand winning, and settlement expansion are rapidly degrading the surrounding environment. They warn that continued destruction of the catchment area could significantly affect future water supply and put pressure on treatment systems.

Authorities are calling for urgent action to protect the dam's ecosystem and safeguard water security for residents in Kumasi and surrounding communities.
