Barekese Dam at Risk: GWCL Raises Alarm Over Severe Forest Destruction | Channel One News
The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in the Ashanti Region has raised serious concerns over the rapid destruction of forest cover around the Barekese Water Treatment area.
Officials say more than 50% of the catchment area has been degraded due to illegal logging, farming, sand winning, and settlement expansion—posing a major threat to water security for Kumasi and surrounding communities.
Speaking during a tree-planting exercise, Regional Chief Manager Dr. Hanson Mensah-Akutteh said GWCL has begun restoration efforts, planting over 5,000 trees to help protect the Barekese Dam, which remains a critical source of water for the region.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to safeguard Ghana's water resources and prevent future shortages.
