Brilliant Minds: Renowned mathematician Shing-Tung Yau

The world today is changing rapidly as basic science drives advances in technology. China, as the world's second largest economy, put a lot of effort into basic science. In 2025, China's total research and development investment exceeded 3.92 trillion yuan, or about $569 billion, reaching 2.8% of GDP. Basic research funding last year hit nearly 280 billion yuan, accounting for 7.08% of total R&D spending. More and more young talents from China and abroad are devoting themselves to basic science. On this, CGTN's Tian Wei talked to Shing-Tung Yau, who, along with his colleagues, is working hard to hold the International Congress of Mathematicians in Hong Kong, China. Here's that conversation.
