New Labour Bill Unnecessary – Austin Gamey Calls for Enforcement Instead

Labour Analyst Austin Gamey has questioned the need for a new Labour Act, arguing that Ghana's existing labour laws are sufficient to address current and emerging workplace challenges.
His comments come after President John Dramani Mahama announced that government is finalising a new Labour Bill aimed at regulating emerging sectors such as remote work, the gig economy, and digital employment platforms.
According to the President, the proposed legislation seeks to modernise Ghana's labour framework and ensure stronger protections for workers in line with global trends.
However, speaking on the sidelines of the 2026 Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management (CIHRM) Conference in Accra, Austin Gamey insisted that the priority should be effective implementation and enforcement of existing laws, rather than introducing an entirely new legal framework.
He warned that failing to properly understand and apply current labour laws could make the introduction of a new bill even more complicated for employers, workers, and regulators.
The debate continues as stakeholders weigh the need for reform against the effectiveness of existing legislation.
