Engineers Propose Nationwide Audit of Multi-Storey Buildings in Ghana

The Ghana Institution of Engineering is proposing a six to twelve-month compliance window for owners of all two-storey and higher buildings to submit their architectural and structural drawings for verification.

According to the institution, the initiative is aimed at identifying unauthorized structures, improving building safety standards, and reducing the increasing risk of building collapses across the country.

Speaking at a news conference in Accra, the Chair of the Structures Sub-Division, Joshua Allotey, emphasized the need for stricter enforcement measures and called for sanctions against building owners who fail to comply after the grace period expires.

The proposal comes amid growing public concern over structural integrity, unauthorized developments, and recent incidents involving unsafe buildings.
