Protests overshadow Mexico City as World Cup opening nears

As Mexico prepares to host its third World Cup opening, demonstrations by teachers and social groups are overshadowing the build-up. The country's main teachers' union has expanded a general strike, blocking major roads in Mexico City to demand pension reform, while relatives of disappeared people and neighbourhood associations have also joined the protests. Riot police have formed barricades near the Azteca stadium. President Claudia Sheinbaum has pledged to continue negotiations whilst ensuring the opening ceremony proceeds peacefully.
